about the artist
Susan Bucknam lives and works in Lakewood, Colorado.
Silversmithing is her third career, following teaching and software development. She is surrounded by family and friends in an area that is close to the mountains she loves. Susan began silversmithing while looking for something to do after retirement. After the first night of the first class she was hooked and looked to a new and expanding circle of friends for advice, inspiration, and sources of materials and tools. She is a self-proclaimed “stone and tool junkie”, and has been heard to mutter “so many stones, so little time”. She grew up rockhounding with her family following a Dad who is a mineralogist.
Artist Statement:
I am inspired by forms in nature, color, pattern and texture. I love working with my hands to form raw materials into expressions of what is in my mind’s eye. All these wonderfully physical activities - hammering, sawing, soldering, sanding, buffing, stone setting - come together to create pieces that express my joy in the materials and in the creative process.
Selecting stones is one of the most fun things I do; to look at the wonders created by nature and the pleasing shapes and finishes created by expert lapidaries is delightful.
I enjoy working with clients to create pieces special to them out of materials that hold meaning to them.
